Living Will

A living will is an advance directive for end-of-life care should a person be unable to communicate his/her intentions to a doctor. State law governs the extent to which a living will is enforced.

A living will may direct:

  • Withholding of life support or heroic measures

  • No resuscitation

  • Withholding of hydration or nourishment

  • Organ donation

  • Palliative medicine

A military member will commonly place an original living will in his/her military medical record, especially if deployed.

Even after you execute a living will, it is important that you discuss your wishes with your family and friends. This may help resolve any disputes that may arise about your wishes regarding your medical care.
