Commanders' Coins

Commanders must negotiate various fiscal obstacles when purchasing and awarding commanders' coins using appropriated funds.

As a general rule, commanders may only present coins purchased with appropriated funds to reward military members and civilian employees for outstanding duty performance or to recognize unique achievements. Such coins may not be presented merely as gifts, mementos or tokens of appreciation. Commanders should keep a log briefly detailing the circumstances of each presentation.

Commanders may present coins purchased with nonappropriated funds only to award military members and DoD employees for excellence in competitions, proficiency in recreational programs, or unusual accomplishment in supporting special events.

Commanders wishing to present coins without restriction may purchase them with private funds.
