Medical Evaluation Board (MEB)

A Medical Evaluation Board (MEB) is a part of the Disability Evaluation System. The purpose of the MEB is to determine if a military member is medically fit for continued military service.

Service members whose medical condition(s) may prevent them from performing duties for more than one year are referred to an MEB.

The MEB is comprised of two or more doctors who review the member's medical records.

The Board determines whether or not the member is fit for continued service. If fit, the member is returned to a duty status. If unfit, the member proceeds to the Physical Evaluation Board.

If the military member is subject to administrative discharge, once the MEB has been initiated, the separation authority may not take final action on the administrative separation action until the MEB has concluded.
