Special Victims' Counsel

A Special Victim's Counsel is an attorney who represents and counsels victims of sexual assault in regards to the following:

  • Victim's right to seek defense counsel for collateral misconduct

  • Victim Witness Assistance Program

  • Responsibilities and support provided by the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator (SARC) and Victim Advocate (VA)

  • Potential for civil litigation against parties other than the Department of Defense

  • Military justice system

  • Accompanying the victim at any proceedings in connection with the reporting, military investigation, and military prosecution of the offense

  • Eligibility and requirement for services available for medical and mental health services

  • Personal civil legal matters

  • Military and civilian protective orders

  • Military and veteran benefits
