Conscientious Objection to Military Service

A military member who sincerely objects to warfare may apply for reassignment to a noncombatant role or separation from service.

The member applies for conscientious objector status through his/her immediate commander. Following an investigation and counseling, a determination is made concerning the member's status.

Pending application, potential promotions are delayed, and commanders should take action to minimize conflicts between military duties and the member's asserted beliefs.

If discharged as a conscientious objector, a member is barred from receiving veterans benefits.
