Reenlistment

The selective reenlistment program (SRP) is designed to ensure only enlisted members who consistently demonstrate the capability and willingness to maintain high professional standards are offered the privilege of continued military service.

Commanders have total SRP selection authority -- as long as no other factors barring immediate reenlistment exist.

In considering reenlistment potential, unit commanders should consider the supervisor’s recommendation, the member’s duty performance, and career force potential. Commanders will not use the SRP to deny reenlistment when involuntary separation is more appropriate.

If a commander intends to deny reenlistment, the commander must notify the member of the specific reason(s) for non-selection, areas needing improvement, appeal opportunity, promotion ineligibility, and the possibility of future reconsideration and selection. The member then has an opportunity to appeal.

SRP non-selection makes members ineligible for promotion and automatically cancels projected promotion line numbers.

Once a member reenlists, any misconduct taking place in the earlier enlistment generally cannot be used as a basis for an administrative discharge action. In lieu of reenlistment, a commander may extend a member's current enlistment to assess a continuing course of substandard conduct (for example, multiple fitness failures).
