Accompanying Spouse Travel

As a general rule, spouses and other family members of an authorized traveler may not accompany the military member or civilian employee on official business at government expense.

Spouses may travel at government expense in limited situations:

  • Attend an official function in which the spouse is to participate in an official capacity

  • Travel is deemed in the national interest due to diplomatic or public relations benefits to the US

Spouses traveling at government expense will be in the company of their sponsors, unless separate travel is justified due to unusual circumstances.

Travel for spouses must be approved on a case-by-case basis.
