Conflicts of Interest

Under federal law, the Joint Ethics Regulation and service regulations, members of the Department of Defense (DoD) shall not engage in any personal business or professional activity that presents a conflict between their private interests and the DoD public interest.

Members should be mindful of the following rules:

  • Members should not use information obtained through their DoD employment and not available to the general public for private gain

  • Active duty members should not engage in commercial solicitations to subordinate DoD personnel

  • With limited exceptions (including the Combined Federal Campaign), fundraising is not allowed in the federal workplace

  • DoD employees may not use their titles, grades or positions to officially endorse a commercial enterprise or product

  • DoD employees may not accept outside employment if it interferes with or is incompatible with the performance of government duties, or if it discredits the government
