Unauthorized Absence

Military members who fail to appear at the appointed time and place of scheduled duty are subject to disciplinary action, based upon the member’s duty status and reason for the absence.

Classification of an unauthorized absence is based upon its duration:

  • Failure to Go: Less than 24 hours

  • Absent Without Leave: More than 24 hours and less than 30 days

  • Desertion: More than 30 days

Commanders have immediate and periodic responsibilities to investigate and make various notifications. A member of the Active Component on Title 10 US Code orders is subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, while a member of the Reserve Component on Title 32 US Code orders is subject to state military code. Members who are absent without authority may be subject to administrative measures such as reprimand, demotion, or discharge; and they may also be subject to arrest and criminal proceedings in more serious cases.
